My UBC Years...

First Class: Math 184 - Differential Calculus
I had to call Debbie up to confirm, then she reminded me of how I always got lost on my way to class in the first two weeks.

Last Class: Commerce 498 – International Business Management
If I counted my REAL last class which I never attended, it should be Chinese 433.

First Paper: English 112 – Strategies for University Writing
I remember it was on the influence of celebrity culture on teenagers.

Last Paper: Commerce 498 – International Business Management
It was something about why Schott Solar should import the semiconductors in their photovoltaic cells from the US. All in all, a disastrous project – irrelevant & unclear.

First Final: Math 184 – Differential Calculus (December 10, 2005)
It truly was a miracle that I passed.

Last Final: Chinese 433 – Advanced Classical Chinese II (April 22, 2009)
Although the post-final celebration had already begun a week earlier...

First Friend: Debbie Ma
We sat together in English 112, and we started talking to each other because she thought I looked smart, and vice versa. Who would've known that she would turn out to be one of my best friends in my UBC years?

Hottest Prof: TM
I had her for marketing. She's funny, friendly, knowledgeable, and looks like a yoga outfit model! You need to see how participative the guys in our class were to fully understand.

Hottest TA: SR
I had perfect attendance for his tutorial for the entire term, and I secretly took a picture of him in one class.

Best Prof: MD (Commerce), JC (Chinese), SR (Commerce)
It's these people that restored my faith in post secondary education.

Worst Prof: RM (Commerce)
Okay, profs can be either boring, difficult, disrespectful, moronic, unapproachable, or irresponsible, but to have ALL these traits, he's the only one.

Easiest Class: Family Studies 200 – Contemporary Family Relation
I actually read the textbook for fun. The chapter on Mosuo's matrilineal society was fascinating and subconsciously planted a seed for my later visit to Lugu Lake.

Hardest Class: Anything to do with calculus/accounting/finance
I was so seriously devastated by all these intro courses I had to take that I almost switched faculty.

Earliest Class: Commerce 293 – Introduction to Financial Accounting
It was at 8:30am and was on the 3rd floor of Angus where the elevator had no stop. No wonder I did horrible.

Favourite Class: Commerce Human Resources 311 – Organizational Analysis
I still remember how speechlessly struck I was leaving the class. This was definitely one of the most memorable experiences I had at UBC.

Most Practical Class: ALL the Counseling Psychology courses I took
Not only do you learn how to talk, most importantly, you learn how to listen.

Most “huh?” Class: Philosophy 349 – Philosophy of Religion
We spent the entire year discussing about the existence of God. Confusing yet stimulating.

Most Interesting Class: Asian Studies 355 – Chinese Cinema
All we had to do in class was watching awesome classic Chinese films and discussing about them! It was like a dream come true.

Most Boring Class: Again, anything to do with calculus/accounting/finance.

Most Regretful About Not Having Taken: Philosophy 385A – Existentialism
And many other philosophy & sociology courses.

Favourite Place On Campus: Nitobe Garden
Any season, any time.

Least Favourite Place On Campus: Anywhere within the 100m radius of any construction site

Favourite Thing To Do: Lying on the lawn on a sunny day, listening to music, and reading a good book.

First Celebrity Seen On Campus: Al Pacino
It was in my first year. He was filming “88 Minutes” in front of Koerner.

Club Most Involved In: UBC Literature Etc.
This was where I met some of the most awesome people I've ever known!

Place I Spent Most Of My Money On: Bookstore.
Sadly, it's not until my third year that I learned the trick of only buying the textbooks two weeks before the exams, photocopying important chapters, and returning the textbooks within 14 days.

Favourite Campus Food: Blue Chip @ SUB
Don’t tell me you’re from UBC if you’ve never tried one of their Marbelous cookies!
